This illustration of the “Moses crossing of the Red Sea story” is one from the archives, and recently appeared on Scripture Union’s Word Live website.
In brief, Jacob’s sons escaped from famine in Canaan to Egypt only because Joseph had been abused by his brothers, ended up in Egypt having been sold as a slave and then through a strange series of events becoming the administrator of food for Pharaoh during the famine.
They settled there, but became so numerous that the new Pharaoh got scared and put the people into slavery. They cried out to God, and God chose Moses to lead the people from slavery in Egypt back to Canaan, the promised land.
When they escaped, they had to pass through the Red Sea, which was blocking there way whilst they were being pursued by the Egyptian forces. The water piled up either side of them while they passed through – whole families, even the small children who were not aware what was happening (incidentally, this is where theologically we would see baptism).
When I illustrated the story of the crossing of the red sea, I wanted to really make it feel that it was in God’s hands.
