I’ve started heading down a slightly different track with my art work, that of the doodle.
Actually, it’s not all that different. If you take a look at my sketchbook shots over the past couple of years you’ll see, particular in the ‘drawing in church’ sections huge amounts of doodling flowing into one another.
I guess the origin of it for me comes from 3 places
1) I used to fall asleep as a kid staring at comic books, looking for detail I’d not seen before in a page
2) I love the textures and shades you can get from black ink. I love black and white more than colour…in fact I struggle to see colours and how they fit together
3) I have fond memories of me and my dad colouring in the huge pictures of Berol doodle art, though I don’t think we finished one of them!

For me the doodle is an expression of a pure form of art. It can be simple geometry, but I like to see it as insane detail in just a small area before moving to the next.
You have to feel your way, and live with mistakes. No redrawing, which makes it llike life really. I use a special ink fountain pen loaded with a permanent ink cartridge, which after 4 months of use is now starting to bed in.
I’m working on a picture of liverpool at the moment, which will have taken about 40 hours to complete, but in the meantime, here is a wildlife picture I completed over the weekend in around 10 hours.
