King Saul started off as a young and funky king, ending up with a tortured old man. This painting had to be worked from scratch, combining the form of a young and vibrant young man with an old drunk tramp. It was heart breaking to produce.

King Saul started off with so many hopes and dreams resting on his shoulders. He is one of those tragic stories in the Bible, the only person who actually seemed faithful to him was the later-king David, who Saul kept trying to kill.
David even had the chance to kill Saul, but didn’t take it. He respected God’s choice of leader of the people.
Nevertheless, Saul ended up twisted, embittered, and tormented by an evil spirit (which scripture says was sent from the Lord, no less, and God’s spirit which empowered him left him.)
