This picture of Angel Gabriel and Mary came about over Christmas sitting in the service. I just went with the flow, exploring the doodle. The hands are pretty big of course…and that’s no accident.
Mary was the ultimate in ‘whatever God says’ she held up her hands and said ‘Lord your will’
The Angel’s face is featureless simply because it’s really hard to draw anything that is so incredible that you can’t really look at it.
Finally, I wanted to blend Mary and the Angel’s hair and wings. They are in union in their submission to God. As I was completing this I had in mind the Rublev icon, where the God head is in openness to welcome us in to join the trinitarian dance. This picture might be the response of Mary to this call, and the reflection can be seen in the hands and open posture; the angel reminding us of the icon.
